Even though the tradition
of holding a national day in honour of the” korvapuusti” originally hails from
Sweden, Finns have good reason to celebrate on 4 October. After all, this is
the favourite bun of the nation. This familiar and traditional rolled cinnamon
bun is an essential part of Finnish festivities and everyday life. From one
year to the next, it maintains its position as one of the most commonly
purchased buns in Finland.

In the retail sale of pre-packaged buns, the top three positions are held
by different types of cinnamon buns, which enjoy nearly a 40 % share of the
pre-packaged bun market.

Various other cinnamon buns
have found their way into the top ten. It also holds its own among the
most popular unpackaged coffee breads and bake-off products.
Cinnamon buns are enjoyed at home and with guests, but to the same extent also
in cafés, restaurants, hotels and various canteens. Vaasan & Vaasan Oy’s
Horeca Product Group Manager Kirsi-Marja Hanhirova says that 2.7 million
VAASAN cinnamon buns are sold annually just to industrial kitchens. When the
figure includes retail sales and bake-off products, it indicates that as many
as 18.7 million VAASAN cinnamon buns are enjoyed by consumers each year. This
makes VAASAN the number one producer of cinnamon buns in Finland.
‘The secret of the continued success of cinnamon buns probably lies in its
familiar, delicious taste and its high-quality ingredients,’ surmises Tuija Palonen, Product Group Manager of the coffee bread
division at Vaasan & Vaasan Oy. ‘A cinnamon-scented temptation is hard to
resist, especially when the flavour takes you back to your childhood days.’
Cinnamon buns are enjoyed in many other countries, including Sweden and
the United States, but to a Finn, nothing compares to a traditional Finnish
rolled bun with its cinnamon filling and its coarse sugar topping. The quality
of the Finnish version is evident from the fact that it is exported to Sweden,
where it complements the abundant local selection of “kanelbullar”.
Cinnamon buns produced at Vaasan & Vaasan Oy’s Joutseno factory are
exported in bake-off packages not only to Sweden but also further afield.
