The recommendation for daily
fiber intake is 25-35 g. This amount can be obtained from regular foods in a
balanced diet described by the food guide pyramid. In practically all Western
countries, the current fiber intake is below the recommendation. In Finland,
men have a higher fiber intake than women, which can be partly a result of
their higher total food intake. The average intake for Finnish men is 23 g and
for Finnish women 18 g per day. In Finland, over 40 % of dietary fiber comes
from rye, in Denmark over 30 %, and in Sweden about 20 %.
