The major benefits of grains in diet are based on dietary fiber. Dietary fiber forms a strong foundation of healthy diet.

Grains provide us plenty of the compounds we require: vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytoestrogens. The fiber found in wholegrain products is an exceptionally good source of these healthy supplements.

Grains are especially abundant in B-vitamins and vitamin E. The B-vitamins are essential for energy metabolism and proper function of the nervous system. Vitamin E is most well-known as a potent antioxidant, i.e. it fights the damaging oxidation of cells.

Of the minerals in grains, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus are essential in energy utilization. Iron is an integral part of the oxygen carrier molecule in your red blood cells, hemoglobin. Selenium, like vitamin E, is an antioxidant. Magnesium and phosphorus also have an important role in the formation of strong bones.
