Grains are our most important source of energy as well as many vitamins and
minerals:
Energy
Grains have relatively little energy (because there is so little fat). At the
same time they hold potential for a hearty and filling meal.
Protein
Whole grains contain a good amount of protein.
Carbohydrates
Most of the energy in grains comes from carbohydrates, especially from starch.
The sugar content is low.
Fat
Most grains are very low in fat. They fit well on a dieter's plate too.
Saturated fat
There is very little saturated fat in grains, and no cholesterol.
Dietary fiber
Whole grains contain a substantial amount of dietary fiber.
Sodium
Grains themselves have hardly any. Grain products can be found with a variety
of sodium contents. Low or regular, something for everyone.
The wide-ranging qualities of grains are unique. Grains are for example good
source of many vitamins and minerals.
